How to Write a Happy Poem

How do you write a happy poem?

You write a happy poem by sitting
On a pavement outside, at night, pretending
To be everywhere in the world while gazing
At the stars, the moon and your lover's eyes.

You write a happy poem by answering a
Question, perhaps two: how'd you feel if you're happy?
You just have to be true to the page and
To the second question, which only you know how
To ask.

You write a happy poem by looking
At me, mirroring everything you are. You know,
I am your friend. What makes me happy should not
Make you otherwise. So, now and tomorrow
And the days that follow, I will mirror you
The way glass mirrors a narcissist in the dead
Of the night.

You write a happy poem by holding
The naked truth to your crowded heart. By
Accepting who they are. Who I am. Who you are.
By praising the God of imperfection
With the holy scriptures of your sanity and composure.

You write a happy poem by calling
Yourself what you want me to call you right.
I am observational. And I want you to think
Of everyone else as me.

You write a happy poem
By not giving a damn to what I think of you.
To what they think of me—your best friend.
To what they think of even everyone ahead you.

Finally, you write a happy poem by writing
A happy poem.
