Rhythms of Grass

Spring sun stirs change.
Soaking rains quicken seeds
rootlets emerge ... diving to anchor,
shoots crack the crust
shaking the plains.

A child’s toes slip
between tender stems
powering towards light.
Each finds a way
bursting with buds
ripe with imprinted urge.

Wild-living roots
spur understory greening
meadows for grazing.
Bees deflower blooms releasing new life.

In drought cycles
the sun’s glare is too harsh
for sproutlings’ mistimed days
and thirsty soil fractures
into honey-comb patterns.
Wind builds walls of dust
plundered from afar.

I yearn for warm spring rain,
waiting for new rhythms.
